R1320 Drag Racing
R1320 is a club of more than 200 members, with at least two things in common, the same employer in Tucson, AZ and a mutual interest in drag racing and cars. Our vehicles of choice range from a turbo-charged inline 6-cylinder Falcon who has had multiple magazine articles published about it, to a brand new Shelby GT-500 Mustang.
Race Report 20 May 2017
The May 20th race was the club’s 5th race of the year. This event took place as part of a Club Day event at Tucson Dragway in which a few of the Drag Racing clubs in the region were running their various racing classes. The turnout at the track was significant and it definitely impacted the time it took between rounds. Our first qualifying run was right at 7 PM and our first round of eliminations didn’t start until 10:45. Our final round of eliminations did not finish until 12:38 Sunday morning. The weather for this event was beautiful with temperatures in the mid 80 at the start of the event dipping down to 70 degrees later in the evening.
We had a very nice turnout for this race with 13 racers coming out to compete. Many of the newer racers this year returned, Steve Hall driving his 2016 Camaro, Craig Cyr with his 2007 Trailblazer SS, and Paul Heyse racing his 2016 Dodge Challenger Hellcat. Paul Heyse made a very nice showing during the qualifying with a .011 reaction time and qualifying 2nd. Many of our regular racers were also out to compete: Clement DeLarge was in his 2006 VW Jetta, Jamal Brewer was campaigning his 2004 Dodge Neon SRT4, Anthony Lopez and Family with his 2004 GTO, Chris Sillman with his 1967 Plymouth Barracuda, Phil Rios in his 87 blue IROC Camaro, Drew Mapes in his 87 white IROC Camaro. Carl Mapes brought out his 1966 Ford Mustang, Angie Brown was driving her 1978 Chevy Truck, and Kevin Hartnett was in his 1994 Pontiac Formula.
We had a new racer join the club during this event, Stefanie, Pesqueira-Murphy who was at the track with her family as her son was racing Jr Dragsters. She stopped by and asked if she could race in our bracket and of course we are always happy to have a new Raytheon family member join our team. Stefanie drove a 2013 BMW 328i and did very well. Unfortunately she lost in the first round of eliminations with her BMW running .001 seconds under her dial breaking out by the narrowest of margins.
We had only one breakdown during this event with Carl Mapes experiencing a door latch issue with his ’66 Mustang taking out of competition after the first round of qualifying. Other than that the racing that evening went very well and the competition was fierce. Dew Mapes was the Number 1 qualifier with a .004 reaction time.
